Ben Marcus, Drummond Woodsum’s Managing Director was extensively quoted for the Union Leader’s December 19th article, “Legal Profession Blurring State Lines: Attorney Ovide Lamontagne Joins Maine Law Firm's Manchester-Based Office.”
The article highlights out-of-state firms building a bigger foothold in New Hampshire and points out more attorneys with offices outside New Hampshire are getting their licenses to practice in the Granite State.
Take Benjamin Marcus, managing director at Drummond Woodsum, another Portland-based firm.
He got his license to practice in New Hampshire just within the last few years.
“The reason is I'm doing more and more work there,” Marcus said. “I need to be a member of the bar.”
His law firm by the new year will have seven attorneys in Portsmouth and eight in Manchester along with 14 attorneys based outside of New Hampshire who are licensed in the Granite State.
“In 2015, we added two attorneys in Portsmouth and two in Manchester,” he said.
Drummond Woodsum is growing in the area of representing municipalities and school districts, including Manchester's.
“I think that in order to grow the firms need to find other places to do what they do and that's what leads to the regionalization,” Marcus said. “The other factor is as firms develop expertise, it's natural to take that expertise into different markets.”
