Kaighn Smith Quoted in Bangor Daily News on Tribe's Lawsuit Against the State Over Control of the Penobscot River

Kaighn Smith, Practice Group Leader of Drummond Woodsum’s Indian Law Group, was quoted in the Bangor Daily News, “Judge to Decide if Penobscot Indian Reservation Includes River Water.”

The article discusses the settlement that gave the Penobscots ownership of the river. “In the settlement act, they retained their ancestral rights within the river,” he said. “They also were promised that they would be protected from interference by the state.”

Smith said that a ruling in the tribe’s favor would not change the public’s access to or use of the river in any way.
