Drummond Woodsum Expands Government Relations & Campaigns Practice with Toby McGrath

Leading government relations consultant Toby McGrath joins premier New England law firm

Drummond Woodsum, a premier New England law firm, is pleased to announce that nationally recognized strategist Toby McGrath is joining the firm as a non-lawyer consultant to lead its Government Relations & Campaigns practice. McGrath joins Drummond Woodsum from United States Senator Angus King’s office where he was Deputy Chief of Staff.

“Toby’s reputation precedes him. He brings 15 years of experience in the legislative and electoral process to assist our clients to achieve their legislative, public policy and electoral goals,” said Benjamin E. Marcus, Drummond Woodsum’s Managing Director.

“Drummond Woodsum allows me to transfer my government experience into the private practice and build a group that focuses on providing successful solutions to our clients’ challenges either on the federal, state, local government levels or at the ballot box,” said McGrath. “Our aim is to be the preeminent firm in northern New England for government relations, campaigns and organizational development. I’m excited to be leading this effort for Drummond Woodsum.”

Prior to joining Drummond Woodsum, Toby worked in Washington, D.C. as Deputy Chief of Staff for United States Senator Angus King, who stated  upon Mr. McGrath’s departure from the Senate office and arrival at Drummond Woodsum, “Toby is a good friend and has been one of my closest and most trusted advisors. Regardless of the issue, I could always rely on Toby to provide sound counsel and good judgment. I am certainly going to miss having him around, but I am tremendously grateful for his service to the State of Maine and I wish him nothing but the best in his next venture.”

In addition, Toby served as Chief of Staff to the Maine Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as Chief of Staff of the Maine House Majority Leader. In 2009, Toby was appointed by President Barack Obama as the Assistant Administrator for Field Operations at the Small Business Administration, where his oversight of SBA activities across the United States gave him a national perspective on the issues facing small business. Toby has run successful local, county and state referendums, legislative and Presidential races in Maine and Massachusetts. Toby was named a recognized as a ‘rising star’ by Campaigns & Elections magazine in 2010. Other previous notable winners of the ‘rising star’ are David Axelrod, Frank Luntz and Donna Brazil.

McGrath is a graduate of Columbia University where he received his M.A. in Organizational Psychology and Change Leadership. He received his bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College. He resides in Brunswick with his wife and two sons.
