Representing four supporters of an independent candidate for governor, lawyers at Drummond Woodsum recently filed suit against the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices challenging the constitutionality of Maine’s election laws which establish different contribution limits for independent and major party candidates and requesting injunctive relief prohibiting the enforcement of those laws. On August 22, 2014, Federal District Court Judge D. Brock Hornby issued a decision in Woodhouse v. Commission on Governmental Ethics granting the injunction and shortly thereafter the Commission changed its enforcement policy, thereby ensuring equal treatment under the law for donors to all political candidates in the upcoming election.
