Melissa Hewey, Practice Group Leader of Drummond Woodsum’s School Law Group was quoted on the WCSH News Center, “Dismissal Recommended for Waterville Principal.”
The media clip addresses the whether Waterville Senior High School Principal will be dismissed or returned to his job.
"State law, 30-A MRS Sec . 6101 prohibits schools from disclosing personnel information concerning their employees so it is essentially a one way street: the employee is able to choose what information to publicize but the school can say nothing."
Hewey added that in regards to making the hearing public, it will be up to the Waterville School Board to find a balance.
"[They] will have to navigate a path that respects the right of Mr. Reiter to have a public hearing with the confidentiality rights of any students and/or other employees who may be involved. My client, the administration, will respect the decisions of the board in that respect."
School department attorney Melissa Hewey said, “The statute says you can only dismiss a principal in the middle of a contract for just cause on the recommendation of the superintendent after a hearing, if one is requested by the employee.”
