Compliance with Wage and Hour Law

Wage and hour law can be complex and challenging. The U.S. Department of Labor as well as a number of federal courts have ruled that the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the federal wage and hour law, applies to tribally operated business operations on reservation property. The FLSA sets standards such as minimum wage and overtime. The presentation will focus on a work day, start to finish, addressing the wage and hour questions confronting Tribal employers. There will also be an extensive discussion of “exempt vs. non-exempt” job classifications and overtime pay obligations.

THIS TOPIC IS HIGHLY RELEVANT WITH THE PROPOSED CHANGES IN DEFINING WHICH EMPLOYEES MUST BE PAID OVERTIME COMPENSATION AS A RESULT OF THE EXECUTIVE ORDER SIGNED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA.

Misclassification of employees can result in huge wage and hour liability. The class is intended to highly interactive encouraging audience participation.
