After graduating from Princeton and Harvard Law School, Joe Delafield became a member of the California Bar and worked as an Associate in the San Francisco law firm Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe for a year. He then spent four years in the Army as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, serving at Fort Meade, MD, Taegu, Korea, and Fort Devens, MA. In 1970 he became an Associate with Drummond Wescott & Woodsum, and in 1974 was made a Partner.

Working under Ed Woodsum in the corporate department, Joe centered his practice on corporate and corporate finance matters, with a side emphasis on condominium and planned unit development documentation. He succeeded Ed Woodsum as Chair of the firm's corporate department, a position he held until his retirement from active private practice in 2000.

Joe was an occasional panelist on Maine State Bar Association education programs, and served for ten years as Chair of the MSBA Corporate (now Business) Section. He was a member of the Bar Association committee that drafted the Maine Nonprofit Corporation Law and was Chair of the Bar Association committee that drafted the Maine Condominium Law. He has served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine on a pro bono basis since 1994.
